THE 12TH NORTHERN QUADRANGULAR (NQ) AT DANOK

When Alor Star (AS) hosted its 33^rd Anniversary in December, 2010, the justification on why it should be held at Danok is as follows:

“Why hold a hash run at Danok?” “Why not?” is my answer. Danok is one of 4 border crossings between Malaysia and Thailand, the other being Padang Besar, Betong and Golok. Danok, one could say is a miniature of Pattaya, renowned amongst sex-tourists as the raunchiest city in the World, beating near competitor Angeles City in the Philippines. Danok has duty free beers, great cheap food and numerous nightclubs, “manned” by unmentionables from as far as Cambodia and China. Mandarin is commonly spoken, which goes well with the Chinamen Hashers of Malaysia. Add on the anything-goes attitude of the Thai authorities, does one need more justification?”

Previously, AS had also hosted NQ4 (2003) and NQ8 (2007) at Danok. NQ4 was unique in that the run was in Malaysia and the on-on was in Thailand. Registration was in Danok, the run at Wang Tepus (near Alor Star) and the on-on in Danok again! This could only be achieved if the event is held close to the border, and there is some clout to minimise immigration formalities for the double border crossings within one day. AS has both these qualities.

For NQ8 and the current NQ12, all activities were held in Danok. This cuts down a lot of inconvenience and saves time. The only disadvantage is that Wang Tepus has great and varied hashing terrain. Danok’s rubber plantations and orchards are not too bad and acceptable. The only major snag in terms of setting the run, is that the main highway has to be crossed and re-crossed and at times entails prolonged running on the side of the highway to get home as happened during the run of NQ12.

Registration was in progress at lunch time on Saturday, 22^nd of October, 2011, at the KPK Garden. The arrivals were greeted by GM Sabun and a few AS Hashturds. Cold beers enhanced the warm welcome and renewed fellowships developed over many common “hashpennings.” So called “light” meals were available, but could easily sustain nutritional needs until after the run, later in the evening.

Participants are estimated to be in the region of 150 to 200, including almost 30 from the Animales. (The Animales northern “ambassador,” Tiger Lee should get the figures correct to feed the archives.)

The run was to start at 1600 hrs. Several minutes before that, the old “Cow” (Kow Chin Fa) of AS was already making love to the mic, enticing participants to gather for mug shots. “Front runners will take less than an hour to complete the run and the back walkers will take about an hour 45 minutes,” announced MC “Cow”. About 10 minutes later, the run was flagged off.

The runners had to cross the main highway, past the frontage shops and along a lane between mostly residential houses. A 15 minutes’ walk brought us to the edge of rubber. Dr “Tits” Ooi, who was hobbling with your Scribe, mentioned that it was going to be a 9 km run. “Too long,” was my reply. On hearing this, “Ah-Pau,” a senior hasher of AS, who was nearby offered, “Follow me, I know how to short-cut.” Believing him, several of us, including Tun See, Tiger, Puduku and Tits followed suit. Paper generally fringed the tar road to the lake, and was read to be in an anti-clockwise direction.

About 30 minutes into the “run”, Ah-Pau took us off paper to the left, along the high-tension power cables and up and down a mole-hill. Downhill a motorbike-capable track was followed to the left, leading to a few huts with their residents grinning at us. The direction was to the west, meaning that we could confidently go towards home. Then we went out of the rubbers and entered a thick secondary jungle, with a track that was slowly getting overgrown, indicating that it had not been traversed on recently. “Cannot, cannot,” shouted those in front, as the track disappeared into the bushes. Then the leaders went in the opposite direction and went seemingly in a circle. Wisely, we backtracked into rubbers again and followed a better used track, that went northwards, paralleling the highway. A few minutes later, paper was found coming from the right and leading to left. It was almost a 2 km walk that took us to the highway and a one km walk along it that brought us to the on on at KPK Hotel.

We reached home in about an hour 45 minutes. Tits agreed that had we followed paper all the way, we would have completed in the same time and with less anxiety. Tun See a few hundred metres ahead complained of overstressed tights muscle the next morning. FROPs completed the run in about an hour.

Before I could satisfy my thirst with cold beers, the “Cow” was already calling the circle to order. Sardine Singh of AS, seated beside me commented, “When Cow gets the mic, he has difficulty putting in down.” Acoustics was terrible and the MC could hardly be understood.

The guest GMs were given honour to execute icings. Animales GM Menses saw the futility of using the mic, and did it on the “Box” (actually a chair) and took audience. Those used to circles and the English-speakers appreciated the circle. But non-English-speaking hashers did not and a few were chatting away loudly in their dialects.

Your Scribe was honoured by Sabun with a past-GM t-shirt (GM 1986). GM Fred of Kampar Jaya also gave honour-icing for my efforts in researching the hastory of the Northern Triangular/Quadrangular. Ipoh was represented by its senior JM.

The Animales were given opportunity to do the “Animale Haka”, followed by the “NQ Haka”, as follows:

Batang Nash Hash Joint OC, Hardwhore was given opportunity to promote the coming event. The unanimous show of hands, encouraged the OC. Sabun promised at least 35 registration! With circle formalities ended, food became free for all. The crowd slowly, but surely dissipated. But the diehards gathered and with Past Animale GM, Wank-Wank in the lead, the hash choir went into action. Your Scribe accompanied Peter “Guitar” Tan of AS to meet his unmentionable and thus missed out the main singing session. On returning at about 2200 hrs, I managed to join in the tail end of this session.

As the time passed 2300 hrs, Scribe called it a day. Sabun, KK and Tits and the AS boys were still around hosting and those desiring cold beers were not denied. I do not know when the party ended. As my head hit the pillow, the loud disco music penetrating the walls of my bedroom reminded me that life was just beginning in this raunchy town that was built for one purpose, sexatainment. Needless to say, the hundred-odd NQ Hasher's partying around, continued contributing to the economic growth of Danok.

Before 0800 hr on Sunday morning, Danok was quiet and slowly coming to life, a great contrast to flashing neon lights and booming music from discos and bars of the previous night. Hasher's, slowly shedding their hangovers, crawled into the hotel dining room, greeted with half closed eyes, and indulged in hefty breakfasts.

At 0900 hr, the Animale's bade farewell to the hosts and was shuttled to the Thai Immigration. Many thanks to AS for another great hash weekend!

亚罗士打野兔俱乐部主席王孙文说人生最重要的财富就是健康，呼吁各界人士务必参与运动活动，为自己锻炼健壮体格来引向充满挑战的人生。

他是于日前位于邻国丹洛举办第12届北方野兔兄弟联谊会是如此表示。

他说，在社会打滚的人士往往为了应酬各方，导致身子出现状况病倒，也连累了家人，更影响了孩儿的求学生涯道路。

他呼吁各界人士务必参与各项运动，只要社会人士坚持每日，或每星期都运动，相信都能迎解病魔侵犯，并在未来的日子获得更美好的将来。

工委会主席陈昭英感激来自怡保，金宝，以及八打灵再也野兔俱乐部成员前来参与，此项多年来的联谊跑步会才能完满举行。

他也感谢亚罗士打野兔成员同心协力，大家不分彼此协助下完成常年各项的野兔活动。

大会仪式在开跑前，也为在日前病逝的前野兔李宝财默哀1分钟，并祝福在另一个世界的他也能参与野兔活动。

（光华日报19日讯）野兔情深！活跃於亚罗士打野兔俱乐部跑山活动的李宝财不幸逝世，一班野兔部友在举殡之日抬棺及高唱野兔会歌，向已故部友作最后致敬。

由王孙文领导的亚罗士打野兔俱乐部19日上午在蔗芭路联发捶车电漆厂向已故部友李宝财遗灵致祭时也将1件李宝财来不及穿的联谊跑步T恤铺盖在后者棺木上。

据了解，该T恤是本周六在黑木山举行的一场“亚罗士打、怡保、金保、八打灵野兔俱乐部第12届联谊跑步会”的大会T恤，而李宝财原本是准备出席的。

本月15日逝世的李宝财生前是本坡蔗芭路联发捶车电漆东主，他也是青运吉打州分会主席李治锟及志隆昆仲令尊，其遗灵在19日上午举殡，奉移至吉北伍佰廊念恩景观墓园火葬及随后安葬。

Penang Hill

As a regular hiker I enjoy my walks over Penang Hill and frequently use the trail to Level 3 and 5.

The walk is maintained in a tidy condition by volunteers who cut fallen branches and sweep away leaves. That was until your organization used the track last week. While I understand the need to post hundreds of paper footprints to guide your members, I do not understand why you left your litter behind after the event. To litter the environment in this way for your enjoyment, and then spoil it for the other hill users after you have gone is totally irresponsible.

Someone in your organization should have been given the responsibility to go back and collect up all the footprints after your event had finished and so return the track to the clean condition you found it in as respect for other users and to the environment.

You give your organisation a bad name with this type of behavior.

I hope in future HHH can learn to respect the environment in the interests of all users, especially those volunteers giving their spare time to maintain these tracks. I feel so sorry for them.

(光华日报30日特别报导)亚罗士打野兔俱乐部温馨家庭日，200名野兔及家眷参加了精心策划的汽车寻宝赛、登山、海上聚会、沙滩排球及联欢晚宴，松懈了日常生活中的紧张和压力。

这项加强交流、促进野兔情谊的家庭日活动先从Alor Star Mall出发，一路上寻宝到槟城州青年公园，然后携带一家大小攀登青年公园后山；午餐后一行人在Tanjung Bunga Beach Hotel举行系列户外活动，其中以海上聚会及沙滩排球赛最让大家留下深刻印象。

该俱乐部主席王孙文对於这项家庭日活动获得部友们热烈响应感到满意，并希望往后的每一项活动，大家都能够继续给予支持，从参与中增进友谊，加强联系。

光头新郎蔡振顺细雨纷飞中跑步迎亲

(亚罗士打12日特别报导)细雨纷飞中跑步迎亲，在野兔俱乐部独特的祝福方式护航下，光头新郎蔡振顺开开心心的迎娶相恋了7年的娇美新娘林秀钊。

5月12日对男女双方及野兔成员来说绝对是一个充满喜悦和纪念的日子，新郎爸爸蔡庆财是哥打士打捷兔俱乐部成员，新郎蔡振顺则是亚罗士打野兔俱乐部会员，跑步迎亲这一段喜事佳话，肯定要让两家亲友们津津乐道好一些时候呢！

现年29岁的新郎蔡振顺是米都Samplus凉篷企业东主蔡庆财与洪丽真夫妇的长男，蔡庆财也是亚罗士打赛峇峇中心主席；新娘林秀钊(28岁，会计行政人员)是商界及华团闻人林顺治与谢月丽夫妇的长女，谢月丽女士也是吉华独中董事及吉华校友会理事。

亚罗士打3H野兔俱乐部已经是第3次跑步迎亲，这次的跑步队也获得哥打士打捷兔俱乐部及亚罗士打跑步俱乐部的拔刀相助；3H主席王孙文形容，“制造”欢乐和纪念是野兔的强项，尤其能够在部友一生中的大喜之日献力，野兔更是义不容辞。

这支鲜红T恤的跑步队周四上午是集合在男方位於默贡的红宝石花园住家出发，在巡警的“开路”下从钢沙路右转太子路过港、然后从人民花园转出安邦惹惹水闸大桥、最后进入蔗芭路的Taman Setia女方住家完成任务，跑步队经过之处无不吸引路人及驾车人士的眼光。

(亚罗士打8日报导)亚罗士打3H野兔俱乐部“GM联谊跑”周六傍晚成功将发起人、前会长及新旧部友聚集在吉北武吉旺山脚下，整个晚上是汗水、笑语、叙旧、美食与啤酒的结合，却不失野兔的精神与家法。

亚罗士打3H野兔俱乐部会长王孙文声称，这项重聚方式的跑山活动能够让新旧部友互相交流及加强联系，对组织更有归宿感，尤其邀请到杨源发、戴德纯及苏西峇兰等多名发起人兼前任会长参与其盛，使到这项联谊晚会比起每周六的跑山更具纪念意义。

值得一提的是，4名新旧会长苏西峇兰、戴德纯、杨源发及王孙文也先后站上传统的啤酒箱主持传统的野兔圈圈，当然，许多部友也难逃传统的“坐冰”三部曲。

亚罗士打野兔俱乐部新任主席王孙文说，只要成员们团结一致，任何会务都能迎面推行。

他是在日前位于幸福楼大酒家举行俱乐部第32届会员大会被获选为主席受邀致词时如此表示。

他说，任何组织的成员只要以合作精神，不管该组织面对任何挑战都能在同屋檐的体制下解决。

他鼓励会员们在新的一年，多参与野兔登山运动，并继续与外坡的野兔俱乐部联系，以便能提升亞羅士打野兔的形象。他也欢迎有兴趣参与登山运动的年轻人士参与野兔俱乐部。

他呼吁部友们给以新届理事会鼎立支持和协助，因为无论谁出任领导，该俱乐部还是大家的友谊桥梁，更是联系世界本同的野兔大家庭。

改任第一副主席的黄新庆医生强调缺乏部友们的支持，该俱乐部相信没有办法顺利举行任何活动。

也是发起元老之一的黄新庆医生感谢理事们在过去的多年，同心协力把会务搞好，也向全体出钱出力的会员致谢，因为他们的付出，才能成功举办33周年慶典登山活動及晚宴。

Why Danok?

I first started hashing in Alor Setar at the end of 1982. Since then, until April 1986, when I was transferred from Alor Setar to KL, I had remained a member. At my parting, I remarked that “I never had such unadulterated fun and the only regret was not having joined the Hash sooner.” After leaving Alor Setar, I made it an effort to attend all its celebration runs and I believe I had not missed one since then. All the runs were great, especially for me to meet old friends, and the last, the 33rd Anniversary held over the weekend of 11 & 12 December, 2010 at Danok was no exception.

Why hold a hash run at Danok? “Why not?” is my answer. Danok is one of 4 border crossings between Malaysia and Thailand, the others, being Padang Besar, Betong and Golok. Danok, one could say is a miniature of Pattaya, renown amongst sex-tourists as the raunchiest city in the World, beating near competitor Angeles City in the Philippines. Danok has duty free beers, great cheap food and numerous nightclubs, “manned” by unmentionables from as far as Cambodia and China. Mandarin is commonly spoken, which goes well with the Chinamen Hashers of Malaysia. Add on the anything-goes attitude of the Thai authorities, does one need more justification?

In the 90’s, Alor Setar’s best kept secret was its regular Cross-Border runs to Danok, for its members only. When many Hashers, including your Scribe got wind of this, Alor Setar was requested to throw this open to others and better still have their future celebrations at Danok. They did, including when Alor Setar hosted the Northern Quadrangular in 2003 and 2007. (The Quadrangular is a gathering of 4 hardcore batang chapters, including Ipoh, Kampar Jaya and the PJ Animales, all more than 30 years old)

Although the official event was the run on Saturday, on Friday at least a couple of hundreds of eager hashers were already in Danok, including the busload from the Animales, supplemented by several from the western Australian city of Perth. These wankers had heard so much about Danok runs, that they were ready to subject themselves to bodily risk by crossing the airspace of Indonesia, to get here. Although uncalled for, the hosts welcomed all to drink-ups at the KPK main hotel. The basement karaoke had the lure of GROS and plenty of cold beers. The GROs of course came at one’s own expense. Late in the evening, many, especially the unmentionables were in the ritual of “head-shaking”. A surprise find was the bar at the back of the KPK Garden, a wing of the main KPK. It had a live band which played nostalgic country and western music. A few Animales, led by GM Wank-Wank and OC Hardwhore, danced till the wee hours of the morning.

Registration, a Record For Batang Hashes?

Registration was open at 1.00 p.m. A total of more than 800 turned up. “Why so many?” scribed asked GM “Tits” Ooi. “What to do, they all called up. No freebees never mind, they just wanted to attend.” And attended they did and had a good time. Worthy of mentioned is the almost 60-member contingent from Batang Jaya of Medan, Indonesia. The rest came from all parts of Peninsular Malaysia. Quoting “Shit-head” of South of Perth City Hash, “During the last couple of years, I had been to this part of the world 4 times, one in Betong (for the Batang Nash Hash) and 3 times here. Once was after the PJ Animales’ 33rd Anniversary.” This must certainly be the highest Batang Hash gathering in this region and probably the world and all being FOC! This must be a record!

True to Malaysian hash culture, food was already available. The favourite was the “char-kway”, rice cake fried “char-kway-teow” style. The chef fried non-stop, till the dish ran out in the evening!

The Run

The run started from the grounds of the KPK Garden at 4.00 p.m. sharp, but not before recognition was given to the main sponsor, who had donated RM20,000. The lit firecrackers heralded the start. MC was the diehard “Cow”, speaking in near-perfect “Queen’s” English and ably translated into Mandarin by KK, “Today there is only one run. Just follow this paper. You have to climb only a few small hills. Front runners will come out between 1 hour and 1 hour 15 minutes. The last runners should be out between an hour half to 2 hours.” GM “Tits” flagged off the run.

Immediately the busy Danok/Hat Yai Highway was crossed. On the other side of the road, a soi (lane) was traversed. After a few turns, in about 20 minutes the rubber was estate was reached. Run direction was generally to the right for a counter-clockwise run. About 45 minutes into the run, a metalled road was crossed, and the mentioned small hills were encountered. FROBs climbed and SCBs tracked between the hill and the road. Soon the road was crossed again taking runners to the edge of the scenic Water Lake. (The Water Lake is fringed by several restaurants. The previous night the Animales had a feast there.) Around the lake, paper went uphill again and FROBs were observed to be going to the left for the home run. Scribe decided that it was enough and went right along the edge of the lake. I took the road towards Danok. After a km or 2, the hotel van came from behind and offered a welcomed ride back to the hotel. Along the way, some “lost” souls were seen going back into the rubbers for a short-cut. The van further picked up 3 hashers, one of whom was “Tokyo” of AS and was warmly greeted by Scribe.

Back at the hotel, the mid-pack was coming in. The time was about an hour and a half. Tiger beers welcomed the thirsty runners, finger food was there to replenish energies. Over beers, camaraderie was renewed. For Scribe, it was opportune to meet old friends, especially from AS. Peter “Guitar” Tan is still single at 62 years old. “Lubang Hidup” had still not lost his habitual twitch. “China Gila” after more than a decade of being GM of Kota Setar, had finally stepped down. “Sardine” Singh left early and so I missed him. I shall stop here, otherwise, this article would be too boringly long.

The Circle and More Entertainment

Soon after the main buffet was served, all GMs and representatives were called on stage and accorded recognition. There were about 40, indicating the number of Batang chapters attending. One thing is for sure, the batangs are not going to be overwhelmed by the more numerous mixed chapters! After the GM on-downs, there were calls for hash performers. The few who went on stage to sing was coolly applauded. The audience slowly fizzled out to more interesting pursuits, like talking cock over cold beers. But the atmosphere changed, when show-time was announced. As the scantily-clad showgirls appeared on stage, the empty chairs in front of the stage were quickly filled. Loud disco music, perfect and gyrating female bodies never fail to attract men’s attention. The show lasting about 45 minutes was needless to say, well-received.

At the end of show-time, and warmed by it, hashers were seen going to their rooms, where their bought unmentionables were waiting to give sexciting service. Many went for more beers and “hunting” at the numerous bars and karaokes. The diehards just stood around at the site and justified the beers that were lavishly served by the gracious hosts. Past mid-night, the live-band next door was a ready alternative for more beers. Even at this hour, fresh seafood was available at reasonable cost. Ask “Balancing” and his Bhayi companions. GM “Wank-wank”, together with “Tits” of AS showed good leadership by dancing till they nearly dropped. Special observation was that “Tiger” was still energetic, while his companion showed sign of fatigue. What medicine did “Tiger” take and what did he do to the companion?

This party ended well past 3.00 a.m.

Farewell

At the KPK Coffee House where breakfast was served on Sunday morning, hungry hashers dived into the breakfast and kept the cooks busy dishing out food continuously. The scene is probably repeated at a few other hotels in town. “The bus leaves at 10.00 am,” announced OC Hardwhore and echoed by Tiger. Joint OC, Puduku was not seen, probably nursing a hangover with fellow drunkard, Kupu-kupu.

Hasty goodbyes and thank you’s and “you guys did a great job” were said to Tits, Loh-hai and the AS mob. Scribe, together with some Animales took the hotel van to the Immigration. After immigration formalities, they boarded the bus for the mundane trip home, where they would say to their unmentionables, “Normal run-lah, lot’s of beers and food only-lah.”

Your Scribe then did the opposite from Friday’s routing, taking the one and half hour van ride from Danok to Hat Yai. Then it was a hazardous 30 minutes trip by tuk-tuk to the airport. On the 1 hour fifteen flight to Bangkok, I was thinking about what I would write for this outing. Undoubtedly, I would end by saying, “Alor Setar you have done it again. You now stand taller than before. I am proud to claim that Alor Setar is my alma mater of Hash.” We look forward to your hosting the Northern Quadrangular next year.
